Symbra was a shy and quiet little girl when she first came to use, especially in unfamiliar surroundings or around strangers. When she first joined our pack, she looked to the other hounds for guidance, and sometimes she wouldn't go outside unless one of the others goes out with her. Once she settled in and began to trust us, she became self-confident and prone to frequent bouts of cavorting around the room with stuffed toys. The rest of the time she slept like the other hounds, usually on the end of the big leather couch, and she sometimes joined us in bed at night. She did have one consistent phobia, however: she hated ceiling fans and would avoid any room in which one was turned on.

At the age of 9, she contracted bone cancer and we had to amputate her back right leg. Once she recovered from her surgery, she quickly adapted to getting around on 3 legs. Chemo treatments and other drugs designed to help keep cancer at bay allowed her to stay with us for another 17 months, but we had to finally let her go when the cancer claimed another leg.
